Specially created by the Irish Government for Pope John Paul II's visit in 1979.
Unlike other (Southern) Irish registrations (which are not transferable to the UK), it then entered the UK market through an auction shortly afterwards.
In recent years it set the (then) record for the highest price paid for a UK registration when Russion Billionaire Roman Abramovich (the owner of Chelsea Football Club) bought it for £285,000.
