TEMPORARY IMPORT SERIES
Introduced in 1921 and continued to 1983 in the format QA to QZ as a prefix with upto to four numbers.
The second letter indicated the issuing authority.
(QC, QD, QH, QN - the RAC; QQ, QR - the GLC; QS - Royal Scottish Automobile Club, QI and QZ reserved for issue in Northern Ireland (but never used); all others (except QX and QY) by the AA)
Then in 1981/82 and 1982/83, QX, QY were issued in blocks by all authorities (when X and Y indicated the year of issue (the same as the year suffix in the normal series)).
1983 to 2001
QA to QY issued in blocks by all authorities (as a suffix in the format 1234 QA to 9999 QY) when the second letter (A-Y) was the same as year prefix.
(A= 1983/1984, B=1984/1985 and so on)
