ZERO NUMBER PLATES |
The number of registrations ever to be issued with just a Zero ('0') as the only number within the full registration is very few indeed.
Those 'zero plates' that have been issued, have all been specially selected by Local Scottish Authorities (with London being the only exception to this). They have all been issued for use on the Scottish Lord Provost's (Aberdeen, Edinburgh, & Glasgow) or other Scottish Provost's cars (and the Lord Mayor's car in London's case).
By the time these Local Scottish Authorities had decided to try and acquire their local 'Number 1' plate for Civic use, most of these had of course already been issued in the years previously, and many of the then present owners were not so reluctant to part with their much prized number 1's. Hence the Zero coming into use, as a special issue.
The following is a list of the 'zero plates' that have been issued in this way.
G 0 - Glasgow
HS 0 - Renfrewshire (now Eastwood)
LM 0 - London
RG 0 - Aberdeen
S 0 - Edinburgh
SY 0 - Midlothian
V 0 - Lanarkshire (now Glasgow)
VS 0 - Greenock
There have been dateless number plates that include a Zero as the first preceding number to another number.
There are some pre-1921 "heavy motor cars" (normally traction engines) with lead zeros, e.g plates in AH 0123 format. (source '1903aat').
Some trade plates also have a zero as the first number.
Also KHW 004 definitely exists, however - we're not sure how it came onto the DVLA computer but it's there. (source '1903aat').
Rumour has it that, one specially issued dateless plate that includes a Zero as the first preceding number to another number is the registration EUR 01.
A database search has revealed EUR 01 does exist, but it will take a photo of this unique registration to prove it! So please, if you have one, send it in, it would make a great addition to this page!
Of course, since the introduction of the current style system of registrations, millions of number plates have now been issued with a Zero as the leading number. Although these '02' '03' '04' '05' '06' '07' '08' '09' registrations are all the 'year identifiers' on 'dated plates'.
